WIVELISCOMBE

Wiveliscombe is a small market town which retains much of its old world charm and a slower pace of life. A real getaway from the pressures of todays life. Still very much a farming area where tractors abound, and if you like the sound of church bells ringing, they practice for Wednesday, Thursday and for Sunday service.

Nestling in the foothills of the Brendon Hills adjacent to Exmoor the Quantocks are to the North, and Blackdown Hills on the south. It is ideally situated for walking days out.

For its size, it well provided with a heated outdoor swimming pool. May-September it's open to visitors. There are 3 takeaway food outlets, shops, a laundrette, a pub, hotel, bar, library and post office. There's also 3 places of worship - St Andrews Church of England, Catholic Church, and the Evangelical Congregational Church. Silver Street offers coffee and lunch on Wednesday at the local church from 10.30am. There’s folk and barn dancing on Tuesday evenings at the local community hall, which is open to visitors.

The local radio station 10 radio broadcasts to the local 10 parishes. It is run and funded by the local people. 

If you're interested in old rail links

Wiveliscombe was once connected to Barnstable from Taunton on the Somerset and Dorset-Barnstable line axed 1966 by Dr Beeching. Go to the end of Station Road to see the old station house and on the Taunton Road out of Wiveliscombe near the filling station on the left can be seen the approach to the station and a road rail bridge standing alone near some fields.

Days out on Public Transport

There's one local bus service which is the number 25 bus to  Taunton which runs hourly with the last bus service from Taunton to Wiveliscombe at 18:15.

This bus service does not run on Sundays.

Taunton is all you would expect from a modern county town. The Somerset Museum is definitely worth a visit and is free of charge except on Mondays when it is closed.

You can also take the 25 service from Wiveliscombe to Dulverton on the edge of Exmoor which has lovely scenery on route.

 

For days out at Weston-Supermare, Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter,Exmouth,Torquay and Barnstable take the 25 service to the Taunton main line station

Take the 25 to  Taunton Bus station  for Bridgewater, Burnham-On Sea, Glastonbury,Wells Wellington the historic costal Port Watchet the West Somerset steam railway to Minhead and Butlins.

 

The last bus returning to Wiveliscombe from Taunton is 18:15 after this you would need a Taxi phone best provider
